Jewelry photography is challenging and is often considered to be one of the hardest fields of commercial photography – most of the items are tiny, with highly reflective mirror-like metal and gemstones that might be clear, translucent, colored, smooth, rough, faceted, etc. I once heard jewelry photography described as a “meticulous craft”, and I can’t argue with that description. Jewelry photography is definitely a specialized field of endeavor and it takes patience and obsessive control of lighting.
Other products include a huge variety of things, from gold-dipped roses, hand-made pottery up to the interior of a million dollar loft.
Note: as of August 2015 I will no longer be photographing jewelry.
